Protoss Warp-in upgrade explained in detail by Dustin Browder!

The original explanation of how the Protoss Gateway/Warpgate buildings would work were rather brief and left much to be wondered about. Wonder no more though, because Dustin Browder took the time to walk us through this in a step by step detailed brief:

- You start by building your Gateways just like you would in the original Starcraft.

- Next you go to your Cybernetics Core and research the “Warp-In” upgrade.

- Upon upgrade completion, you can very rapidly transform your Gateways into Warpgates. (Process is reversible though there is no reason for a skilled player to reverse it).

Once your Warpgates are created:

- Select the Warpgate and build a unit like you would normally do with a Gateway.

- Then set your “rally” or target point anywhere within a psi power radius.

- The unit will start to build or warp-in at this spot at a very rapid rate.

- Caution must be exercised though, because the unit can be killed before the warp-in process is completed.

- Following the process, the Warpgate must now “cooldown” for the period of time that it would have taken to normally create that unit.

This allows for devastatingly effective surprise attacks by warping in Dark Templars and other high damage output units into enemy bases bypassing their choke point defenses.

One thing that can quickly destroy an otherwise excellently designed RTS (real time strategy) game is turning it into a glorified “rock, paper, scissors” match. Some people are concerned that Blizzard is making certain units too effective versus others, and that these natural counters are going to ruin the concept of multiple viable options for countering “x” unit. This is a bit of a ridiculous notion though, because this naturally happens in EVERY RTS game. Every unit has something that counters it well, so obviously the opponent is going to make that unit. Then in response, the other player will make the counter to the latter unit, thus the concept of mixed armies. This is a very “noob” question if you will, because any remotely intelligent person knows that you can’t simply mass one particular unit, because there are natural counters to it. Taking this concept out of the game would simply make it one of massing and “attack-moving,” so I don’t quite understand what this person’s concern is.

Dustin Browder, Lead Designer for Starcraft II Development comments that these:

“Rock-paper-scissors relationships are slowly being ground out. Some of them were never that real anyway. Since it is more exciting to show those relationships in a demo, we sometimes pushed them over-the-top just to show off units. As time goes by we have fewer and fewer rock-paper relationships. We will keep working on this issue.”

The Protoss Mothership is a very controversial unit that the Devs are currently attempting to implement into Starcraft II. Many people are concerned that a “super unit” will be too over-the-top powerful and ruin the balance of the game, but Blizzard’s Lead Starcraft II Designer, Dustin Browder comments that it is no more of a “super unit” than the Battlecruiser or Ultralisk were in the original game.

Dustin reveals that there is still much revamping and that it is not uncommon for major balance changes to occur once a game goes into beta testing. He posts on the forums that:

“We are still working on the Mothership, trying to make it as cool as possible. It currently is not a super-unit by our definition (its health and damage are balanced for cost) though you are allowed only a single Mothership.

Its powers are pretty epic and are currently way too powerful. Nerfs are in-coming but we are focused on the Zerg so we havent put a ton of work into her for several weeks. When there is something worth updating on this unit, we will update.

Overall the unit has some promise, but she has a long way to go to be worthy of StarCraft 2.”

Exciting news to hear for all you Zerg fans who have been desperately awaiting an update. Hopefully this means that the Zerg page will be up and running this coming week or the following, putting the game one step closer to the Beta Stage.
